Personal:

Married, 5 children. I hated long distance running since I was a kid. I ran track as a sprinter as a kid and did field events. Never did well with distances over 200 meters.

Took up running on-and-off over the past 8 years, but never anything longer than a 30-minute run and definitely not over 3 miles.

My brother-in-law, who ran his 30th St. George marathon in 2008 got me running and challenged me to do more than a 5K (convinced me to prepare for and run the Freedom Festival 10K). The rest is history.

Had back surgery in 2003 (I think it was 2003). It was a long recovery-- about a year.

I love to eat, so it is a good thing I am running. :-)

While I don't consider myself extraordinary, I am proud of the fact that I complete whatever I set my mind to. The trick is, getting myself to set my mind to something. ;-)

I am a competitor, even though I don't expect to be in the Olympics at my age. But, as a competitor, I try to save a bit in the gas tank for a 200 meter sprint at the end of any race I am in, largely because I love the feeling of sprinting.

Started some fartlek training today (what a silly word). I ran at a normal pace for 5-6 minutes, then opened it up to a full sprint for about 40 seconds, the slowed to a walk for 30 seconds, then back up to a gentle running pace for 5 minutes while I caught my breath. Repeated that about 6 times. It was H*A*R*D but a lot of fun. Helps to have some good music playing. I sure hope I am doing this right.

Some cross-training today. Lifted some weights, stretching, then alternated between a slow run and walk at a 12% grade on the treadmill. That really made my calves burn and heart pump.

Was pretty stiff today. Spent about 15 - 20 minutes stretching. I am not a very limber person... working on that. Took an easy run on the treadmill, then stretched again.
