Personal: Married, 5 children. I hated long distance running since I was a kid. I ran track as a sprinter as a kid and did field events. Never did well with distances over 200 meters. Took up running on-and-off over the past 8 years, but never anything longer than a 30-minute run and definitely not over 3 miles. My brother-in-law, who ran his 30th St. George marathon in 2008 got me running and challenged me to do more than a 5K (convinced me to prepare for and run the Freedom Festival 10K). The rest is history. Had back surgery in 2003 (I think it was 2003). It was a long recovery-- about a year.
I love to eat, so it is a good thing I am running. :-) While I don't consider myself extraordinary, I am proud of the fact that I complete whatever I set my mind to. The trick is, getting myself to set my mind to something. ;-) I am a competitor, even though I don't expect to be in the Olympics at my age. But, as a competitor, I try to save a bit in the gas tank for a 200 meter sprint at the end of any race I am in, largely because I love the feeling of sprinting.
